Carlson catches first NFL TD


Litchfield native John Carlson caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Charlie Frye in the second quarter of the Seattle Seahawks' 27-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers Oct. 12.
It was the first touchdown catch for Carlson in his NFL career.
Carlson, a second-round pick by the Seahawks this spring, finished the game with four catches for 22 yards.
The rookie tight end leads Seattle in receptions (16) and receiving yards (190) so far this season.

Early anterless firearms deer season open Oct. 10; blaze orange required


Hunters in 30 of Minnesota’s deer areas will have the opportunity to help control deer populations by taking an antlerless deer during an early hunt on Oct. 11-12, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The early antlerless firearms season was first conducted in 2005. It is designed to help reduce deer populations in areas that are significantly above goal and where current intensive management strategies have not been effective in lowering deer populations.

Safe shooters are never sorry


Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conservation officers (CO) found themselves looking for cover during the recent moose and waterfowl openers, and remind hunters to always follow safe firearm discharge procedures.
While pulling up to check some moose hunters, CO Darin Fagerman of Grand Marais came across a couple of hunters with angry looks on their faces and another who looked a bit confused. One of the men explained to the CO that the confused-looking man had an accidental discharge of his rifle just as the CO pulled up.

ACGC levels Lac qui Parle Valley


Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and coasted to a 40-3 triumph Oct. 10 at Lac qui Parle Valley.
Deron Buboltz rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns for the Falcons (7-0, 6-0 West Central Conference-South).
Justin Hanson, Jordan Tanner and Mitch Tauer also scored for ACGC.
The Falcons can clinch the WCC-South title outright with a home win over Benson Oct. 15 in Grove City.

EV-W wins homecoming game


Tyler Geislinger tossed five touchdown passes, guiding Eden Valley-Watkins to a 54-6 homecoming victory over Rockford Oct. 10.
Geislinger completed 14 of 17 passes for 280 yards for the Eagles, which clinched a share of the Central Minnesota Conference title.
Nick Schoenecker caught seven passes for 138 yards and scored three touchdowns for EV-W (7-0, 6-0 CMC).
Ryan Tri, Jake Ruhland and Kevin Kramer also caught touchdown passes in the win.
EV-W, ranked No. 2 in Class AA, plays host to Holdingford at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 in Eden Valley.

Dragons have their way with Highland Park


Litchfield senior Nic Johnson ran for 159 yards and four touchdowns at the Dragons defeated St. Paul Highland Park 51-24 in nonconference football action Oct. 10.
Steve Hendrickson accounted for a pair of Litchfield (4-3) scores, running 28-yards for a touchdown and throwing a 15-yard strike to Dominic Devine.
Quarterback Aaron Solbrack added a 1-yard touchdown run, finishing the game with 93 yards rushing and 90 yards passing.
Nate Adams recovered a fumble in the end zone for the other Dragons' touchdown.

Barkley, Coleman and Franken debate tonight


Minnesota’s candidates for U.S. Senate will debate at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Breck High School in Minneapolis. It will be broadcast on television. The format for the debate is described as, “real debates with give and take from the candidates.”
Debate Minnesota, the “multi-partisan” event sponsor, will host three Senate debates this season including tonight's event. The final debate will be Thursday, Oct. 16 at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Litchfield's boys and girls cross country teams finished seventh at the Wright County Conference meet Oct. 9 at Crown College in St. Bonifacius.
Mound-Westonka topped the other eight teams in the field to win the boys and girls team titles.
Individual Litchfield results were not available.
Litchfield will compete in its final regular-season meet at 4 p.m. Oct. 14 at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted.

Five tennis players survive sub-sections


Two Litchfield doubles teams and singles player Lauren Mergen survived the Section 5A-East tournament Oct. 8 in Glencoe.
Mergen went 2-1 in singles action, finishing third in the sub-section.
Mergen will take on Ashley Trulock of MACCRAY in the Section 5A quarterfinals at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 at Gold's Gym in St. Cloud.
Litchfield's Chelsie McGraw and Brenna Johnson also finished 2-1 and placed second in sub-section play.
McGraw and Johnson will play Emily Emdieke and Bridget Bergeson from New London-Spicer in the section quarterfinals.
