Kline, Sarvi to debate Monday


U.S. Rep. John Kline, a Republican, and Democratic challenger Steve Sarvi will debate for the first time on Monday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The event will be moderated by Jeff Passolt from Fox 9 News.

The debate will be at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen and it's sponsored by the Carver County Chambers of Commerce. Seating is limited an reservations are requested. Chamber members can attend free. All others will be chraged $10.

Man gets nearly 5 years in hit-and-run death

Armando Velasquez, 20, of Faribault was sentenced to 57 months in prison by Dakota County District Court Judge Timothy McManus Friday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed a 32-year-old Prior Lake man at the Event Center parking lot in Burnsville on April 5. Velasquez was also ordered to pay restitution in an amount to be determined.

Velasquez pleaded guilty to one count of criminal vehicular homicide in August.

21-year-old sentenced for striking man with car


A Shakopee man who had been accused of attempted second-degree murder without premeditation for intentionally striking a man with a car will serve six months in jail after pleading guilty to a reduced charge.

Sabers fall to Hutch


Shakopee held an early lead but in the end Hutchinson was too much.

Hutchinson defeated Shakopee 34-7 on Friday, Oct. 10.

The Sabers grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Zach McBeain.

After that it was all Hutchinson as they scored 34 unanswered points.

A 24-year dream came true: State baseball tournament a success


An editorial in the Oct. 9 print edition

 

The State Amateur Baseball Tournament, held over three weekends in Shakopee and Chaska, was considered a rousing success, which can be attributed to literally hundreds of people who liberally gave of their time, money and sweat.

Portion of northbound 35W to close nights next week


The northbound lanes of Interstate 35W, from I-94 to Highway 62, will close nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Monday, Oct. 13 through Thursday, Oct. 16.

The nighttime closures are needed to place bridge segments at the eastern junction of I-35W and Highway 62. The work is part of the I-35W/Highway 62 Crosstown reconstruction project.

The southbound lanes of I-35W and all lanes of Highway 62 will remain open during the nightly closures.

Funeral notice for Cecelia B. Brouette


Cecelia “Ceil” Brouette, 98, of Prior Lake and formerly of Minneapolis, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 at St. Francis Regional Hospital, Shakopee.
Visitation is Monday, Oct. 13, from 4-8 p.m. at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Prior Lake, and also one hour prior to the service at church on Tuesday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. at Church of St. Michael, Prior Lake.
